Google and Yahoo make money by selling advertising space on web pages. For example, both their free e-mail applications have built in readers that scan every word in your e-mail and that is why pop-ups go somewhere on the screen. This is the same as Facebook. Anytime you fill our your likes/interests you can see ads that are very similar. I’m engaged right now, and I have a lot of wedding advertisements on my Facebook pages.
Google and Yahoo scan the content of searches and e-mails and place ads on the site.

Dear Friend,
Not google and Yahoo, all companies, NGO and UN are running due to Add. It is the different things that the google, yahoo, news paper and Media is running due to commercial adds.
See every time when will search on google and yahoo, you will get some links in right side and top of the searh page. These are the commercial adds of google and yahoo. Yahoo and Google are running Publisher and adword program to earn income for you and itself.
And if Microsoft is providing something in free because of Google.

all the ads you see on the site, plus you have to pay to have your link be at the top of search results.

By selling adds for the page. Every time someone clicks one they get a few tenths of a cent over time this adds up
